CONCORD, N.C. – Pennsylvania racer Roy Hayes III won two mini-outlaw races during North Carolina Race Week last week, taking the checkered flag at the Iredell County Fairgrounds and then winning again at the Millbridge Speedway, both in the Intermediate division.
Hayes, 12, one of three brothers who compete in mini outlaws and bandolero cars under the Hayes Motorsports banner, passed SKE/Kyle Beattie Racing teammate Tucker Scanlon for the win at Millbridge after a fierce battle that also involved Roy’s younger brother George for much of the race.
“It was cool that both of us were racing with Tucker for a while,” Roy said after. “George is getting better and smoother. That was a fun race. It feels good to win at Millbridge, especially because we got the win at the fair this week, too. Our whole team works hard and anytime one of us wins it’s a win for the group, so I’m glad I could get one for my family and for the team. I hope we can win some more now!”
The family is in the process of relocating the the Charlotte, North Carolina area and the kids are already enrolled in nearby schools.
“I like it down here,” Roy smiled. “There’s a lot more racing we can do here at our age, and you can learn from some of the best in the business. It’s pretty exciting for us right now. I’ll be racing a legends car on pavement soon also, besides the mini outlaw on dirt, and my brothers have bandoleros to race on pavement, too. My parents are behind us 100 percent, and that’s pretty awesome to have the chance to do all of this and be with people who can teach us and help us get better.”
